Dr Stephan Atzert is the German Discipline Coordinator in the School of Languages and Cultures.

Stephan's project, titled "The Philosophy of Saintliness: K.E. Neumann's German Translations of the Buddha's Discourses and Schopenhauer's Philosophy," analyses Neumann's representation of Pali Buddhism in terms of its dependence on a particular reading of Schopenhauer and Kant (about which Neumman is explicit in his commentary). It will also discuss  the validity of his interpretations of key concepts and specific texts, vis-a-vis the perspectives provided by current Buddhist Studies.

Stephan will be using his Fellowship to complete development of four chapters of the monograph.
