God Loves Uganda (2013, 83 min)

Directed by Roger Williams

This award-winning documentary examines the complex—and often problematic—role of American evangelicals in Uganda today.

With minimal commentry and exceptional access, it follows a group of young American missionaries as they travel to Uganda for the first time, hoping to convert local people to their vision of a Christian society. This story forms a backdrop to the documentary’s main subject: how the American Christian right, somewhat marginalised at home, nevertheless fuelled virutently anti-LGBT sentiment abroad in Uganda that led to the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Act in 2014, criminalising homosexuality.

The material lends itself to an examination of a number of big issues, including the ongoing politics of race and mission in post-colonial countries; American cultural influence in international aid and development projects; the transnational dimensions of anti-gay movements; and the local character of Christianity in Africa.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Levi Obijiofor (Communication and Arts, UQ), Shannon Zimmerman (Political Science and International Studies, UQ), and Julietta Achieng (UQ) — with plenty of opportunity for Q&A with the audience.
