IASH Intellectual and Literary History Public Seminar Series, "The Future of History"

The Changing Fortunes of History as an Academic Discipline

This lecture will draw on a recently completed study of higher education in Australia. The Unified National System established in the 1990s brought substantial changes to university funding, management, teaching and research that had particular implications for core disciplines in the humanities and social sciences such as history. The lecture examines patterns of activity over the past quarter-century and their implications.

Stuart Macintyre is Professor Emeritus of the University of Melbourne and has written extensively on Australia’s political and social history, as well as its intellectual traditions. His most recent book is Australia’s Boldest Experiment: War and Reconstruction in the 1940s. His study of how Australian universities were reconstructed from the 1980s,  No End of a Lesson, appears later this year.
