Professor Graeme Turner awarded Honorary D.Litt

17 Feb 2017

On Saturday 18 February, Emeritus Professor Graeme Turner was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by Curtin University in recognition of his lifetime work as a scholar and his continuing advocacy for the humanities and social sciences.

Professor Turner has made--and continues to make--an outstanding contribution to the field of humanities and to the broader research and education sector. He is a leading international scholar in media and cultural studies, and one of the founders of these disciplines in Australia. Over his career, he has published two dozen books, many of which have gone into multiple editions and have been translated into nearly a dozen languages. He is a past President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and a winner of a prestigious Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship. He has also served on the  Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council, only the second humanities researcher to have done so.

Professor Turner was the founding Director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (CCCS) based at the University of Queensland, one of the most productive and respected centres of cultural studies in Australia, the legacy of which lives on in the Critical and Cultural Studies research program of IASH.

In 2014 Professor Turner co-authored the monograph, Mapping the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in Australia, a major report commissioned by the Department of Industry and the Academies of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Report demonstrated the strength of the humanities and social sciences sector in Australia, and its importance to the higher education system and the broader national research and innovation system.

IASH would like to congratulate Professor Turner on this remarkable achievement.
